The basis of any website is HTML or HyperText Markup Language - this is simply a language which the browser on your computer can understand - an HTML page simply tells the browser where the various bits of text and images are stored (normally on a computer somewhere on the internet) and where they need to be displayed on the page in the browser. This technology is fine for the majority of websites where the page content needs to be updated infrequently and is essentially 'static', but there may be a need to display 'dynamic' data on a page, for example product stock levels or football team league positions - things which are constantly changing. For this type of data, 'static' HTML is no longer sufficient and this is where it starts to get interesting.

Using dynamic technology combined with a database, dynamic data which is stored in the database can be 'pulled out' on the fly, as and when someone wants to view the webpage and as long as the database is continually updated with the latest data, the page always has the latest information.
The updating of the database can either be done manually or through a computer program which we can write to do the work for you. This computer program could, for example sense when a customer buys a product through the webpage, check the stock levels, update the stock levels, provide an order number, provide shipping information, send a confirmation email to the customer etc etc etc..the possibilities are endless.
